Background of the Study
Adolescent reproductive health education is a critical tool in reducing teenage pregnancies and promoting healthy sexual behaviors. In Ekiti State, Nigeria, rising rates of teenage pregnancies have been linked to insufficient knowledge about reproductive health, limited access to contraception, and cultural taboos surrounding discussions of sexuality (Oluwaseun, 2023). Reproductive health education programs aim to equip adolescents with accurate information regarding puberty, contraception, and the risks associated with unprotected sex. These programs are typically delivered through schools, community centers, and digital platforms and have been shown to empower young people to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health (Adebisi, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these educational initiatives is often compromised by factors such as low parental involvement, conservative cultural norms, and a lack of trained educators. Evaluating the impact of adolescent reproductive health education on teenage pregnancy rates is essential for informing policy reforms and tailoring interventions to meet the unique needs of young people in Ekiti State (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Teenage pregnancies in Ekiti State remain a significant public health and socio-economic challenge despite the existence of reproductive health education programs. Many adolescents lack comprehensive knowledge about reproductive health, resulting in high rates of unintended pregnancies. Contributing factors include inadequate school-based education, cultural stigma, and limited access to modern contraceptives. These challenges are compounded by low levels of parental and community support, which further restrict the effective dissemination of reproductive health information. Consequently, the current interventions have not been able to sufficiently curb the rate of teenage pregnancies, leading to adverse health outcomes and limiting educational and economic opportunities for young mothers (Adekunle, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of reproductive health education programs in reducing teenage pregnancies in Ekiti State.
  2. To identify barriers to effective reproductive health education among adolescents.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving program delivery and engagement with youth and communities.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are current reproductive health education programs in reducing teenage pregnancy rates in Ekiti State?
  2. What are the main barriers to the successful implementation of these programs?
  3. What improvements can be made to enhance adolescent engagement and knowledge?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Comprehensive reproductive health education is significantly associated with lower teenage pregnancy rates.
  2. Cultural and parental barriers negatively affect the uptake of reproductive health information among adolescents.
  3. Enhanced, culturally sensitive educational interventions will improve reproductive health outcomes among teenagers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on secondary schools and community centers in Ekiti State. Data will be collected through surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews with educators and adolescents. Limitations include potential cultural sensitivities and self-report biases.
